Why I Recommend Gut Microbiome Testing

‍As a Clinical Nutritionist, one of my areas of special interest is working with people to support their gut health. This often shows up as bloating, constipation or other digestive issues. Which means that gut microbiome testing can be a really valuable tool to get to the bottom of what is really going on.

However, the benefits of gut microbiome testing go beyond just supporting digestion. Your gut microbiome plays a central role in digestion, immunity, mood and hormonal balance. When something feels off, whether it is bloating, irregular bowel habits, skin flare ups or unexplained fatigue, the answer often starts in the gut.

Your Gut Microbiome Affects More Than Just Your Gut

Signs that your gut microbiome may need attention can show up in surprising places. Testing is not necessary for everyone, but it can be highly valuable if you are experiencing:

  • Persistent bloating, gas or irregular bowel motions.

  • Persistent fatigue or low energy that does not improve, even with adequate rest.

  • Recurrent skin conditions such as eczema or acne.

  • Low mood, anxiety, or brain fog (the gut brain axis is real, and well documented).

  • Hormonal symptoms, including PMS, irregular cycles, or signs linked to PMOS (formerly known as PCOS).

  • Recurrent infections or a weakened immune response.

  • A history of antibiotic use or gut infections.

  • Food sensitivities that seem to appear out of nowhere.

  • Joint pain or inflammation with no clear cause.

  • Difficulty losing or maintaining weight despite consistent effort.

If any of these sound familiar, especially alongside gut symptoms, a gut microbiome test can help us to uncover what is actually going on beneath the surface, rather than guessing or treating symptoms in isolation.

Why I Choose Microba

Not all gut tests are created equal.

I use Microba, an Australian-based company, in my clinical practice because they combine multiple testing methods in one sample to deliver the most complete picture of your gut microbiome.

This includes microbiome composition, GI markers, and pathogens in a single report, with full coverage of the human gut microbiome and the ability to explore results by species, phylum, and genus. Their reports are detailed, backed by scientific evidence, and genuinely useful for building a personalised treatment plan, not just interesting to look at.

A Microba Microbiome Explorer report gives me:

  • In depth microbiome mapping: Showing the full diversity and balance of bacteria present in your gut, not just a handful of "good" or "bad" species.

  • Functional markers and healthy reference ranges: So I can see how your microbiome is actually functioning, not just what is in there.

  • Evidence graded insights: Meaning every recommendation is tied back to current research, rather than assumption.

  • An Expert Summary: Which translates complex data into a clear picture I can use in clinic to develop your personalised treatment plan.

  • Optional gut physiology and pathogen screening add-ons: Super useful when I suspect gut dysfunction or infection may be part of your picture.

This level of detail means I am not guessing with protocols. I can tailor targeted recommendations, whether that is specific fibres, nutrients, fermented foods, or probiotic strains, or referrals for further investigation, based on what your microbiome actually needs. It takes the guesswork out of gut health and replaces it with a personalised, evidence based plan.

Is Microbiome Testing Right for You?

If you have been dealing with unexplained fatigue, skin flare ups, hormonal symptoms, mood changes, or ongoing gut discomfort, testing can offer real clarity. Rather than trial and error with supplements or diets, you get a clear starting point and a plan built around your results.
