Three Simple Steps to Better Digestion

Good digestion does not start with the first bite. It starts before you even pick up your fork.

Our bodies digest best when we are in a calm, "rest and digest" state. If you are rushing through lunch at your desk or eating on the go, your body is quite likely still in a stressed, "fight or flight" mode, which can slow digestion and lead to bloating, discomfort or sluggishness.

Here are three simple strategies that I recommend to my clients (and do myself) to set your body up for better digestion:

  1. Take 3 to 5 slow, deep belly breaths before you eat

This helps shift your nervous system out of stress mode and into a calmer, more receptive state. It signals to your body that it is safe to relax and start producing digestive juices, ready for the meal ahead.

  2. Chew your food thoroughly

Chewing well breaks food down mechanically and mixes it with saliva, which contains enzymes that kickstart the digestive process. Slowing down and chewing your food properly means less work for your stomach and gut later down the digestive tract.

  3. Go easy on fluids with meals

Drinking large amounts of water or other fluids during a meal can dilute your stomach acid and digestive enzymes, making it harder for your body to break down food efficiently. Try sipping small amounts if needed, and save larger drinks for between meals.

Small changes like these can make a big difference to how comfortably you digest your food, and how much benefit you will get from it when it comes to absorbing the nutrients they contain.
